DescriptionThe MLC Deaf Integration Program began in 1978 in response to the limited secondary education options available to deaf girls in Victoria at the time and was the beginning of a much more inclusive educational environment.
During the 1980s, enrolments of deaf and hearing‑impaired students increased, prompting MLC to formalise its commitment to deaf education. In 1986, the College established a dedicated Deaf Integration Unit, appointed its first full‑time Teacher of the Deaf, and expanded support to include interpreters, notetakers, specialist teaching, and allied services. Strong parent involvement through the Deaf Integration Support Group helped embed the program within the wider school community.
Now known as the MLC Deaf Education Program, it follows MLC’s broader Learning Diversity approach, which supports deaf and hard‑of‑hearing students to participate fully in academic and co‑curricular life and to pursue successful post‑school pathways.Date1986 -
