BiographyDavid Norman Loader is a prominent Australian educator and former Principal of MLC, where he served from 1979 to 1996.
Born in Brisbane, Loader was educated at the University of Sydney, where he completed a Bachelor of Science, Diploma of Education, and later a Master of Education. He began his teaching career in New South Wales before becoming Principal of Kinross Wolaroi School (1971–1978), gaining a reputation as an innovative and forward-thinking educational leader.
In 1979, Loader was appointed Principal of MLC, becoming the College’s first lay (non-minister) principal. During his 17-year tenure, he led the school through a period of significant transformation and modernisation. He is particularly noted for pioneering educational innovation, most famously introducing one of the world’s first one-to-one laptop programs for students in 1990. This initiative placed MLC at the forefront of technology in education and influenced schools internationally.
Loader also championed student-centred learning, flexible timetabling, and experiential education, including the development of residential and outdoor learning programs - such as MLC Marshmead. His leadership emphasised creativity, independence, and a shift away from traditional teaching models toward more inquiry-based approaches.
