BiographyJ. Reford Corr (1854–1928) was an Irish-born educator who served as Headmaster of Methodist Ladies’ College (MLC) from 1893 to 1906. Born in County Monaghan, he emigrated to Australia with his family at a young age and was educated within the Victorian school system. Corr began his career as a pupil teacher and went on to study at the University of Melbourne, where he earned degrees in Arts and Law.
Before joining MLC, Corr was a teacher and later principal of Holstein House Ladies’ School in South Yarra. He joined MLC in 1889 as Second Master and became Headmaster in 1893. During his tenure, he strengthened the academic curriculum, particularly through his emphasis on grammar, literature, and systematic teaching methods. He also supported the inclusion of practical and artistic subjects such as needlework and introduced more structured assessment practices.
Corr’s leadership was shaped by ongoing tensions with College Council leadership, particularly regarding academic standards and governance, which ultimately led to his resignation in 1906. He later continued his career in Western Australia, leading the Girls’ College and teaching at Perth Modern School.
