BiographyMrs Lucy Kilvington was a devoted alumna and influential supporter of MLC, whose lifelong commitment helped shape the School’s community and traditions. She attended MLC from 1893 to 1903, one of five daughters of the prominent Methodist minister Rev. J. J. Watsford, a close associate of the College’s founding Principal, Rev. Dr W. H. Fitchett.
In 1904, Kilvington played a pivotal role in founding the MLC Old Collegians’ Club (OCC), becoming one of its four founding members and serving as its first Honorary Secretary. Her leadership and dedication continued over many decades; she was twice elected President of the Club, in 1914 and 1933, and later became its first Honorary Life Member in recognition of her outstanding service.
A passionate advocate for the College, Kilvington maintained close ties with MLC throughout her life. She served as the OCC representative on the College Council from 1942 to 1944, hosted numerous club gatherings at her Hawthorn home, and supported initiatives that enhanced student life. Among her lasting contributions was the establishment of the Lucy Kilvington Prize for Science, which continues to be awarded in her honour.
Her generosity extended to the physical and spiritual fabric of the College, including a donation towards the construction of Fitchett Chapel and the dedication of a stained glass window in memory of her father shortly before her death. Following her passing on 14 May 1961, the OCC commemorated her legacy through the Lucy Kilvington Appeal, which funded a new school tuck-shop bearing her name.
