BiographyMiss Lucy Kellaway was a distinguished educator, scholar, and long-serving leader at Methodist Ladies’ College (MLC), whose lifelong association with the School spanned more than half a century. She first entered MLC in 1912 as a scholarship student and quickly excelled academically, becoming a Prefect and earning honours in English and History upon her graduation in 1915.
After further study at the University of Melbourne and Trinity College, where she demonstrated outstanding ability across both the humanities and mathematics, Kellaway began her teaching career before returning to MLC in 1927.
Over the next 39 years, she became one of the College’s most influential figures. A gifted mathematics teacher, she inspired generations of students while also supporting those who required additional academic assistance. Her talents extended beyond the classroom into administration; in 1955 she was appointed Chief of Staff and served as Acting Head of the School during the Principal’s absence.
Kellaway was widely respected in the broader educational community, holding leadership roles including Vice-President of the Mathematical Association, President of the Assistant Mistresses’ Association, and membership on the Schools’ Board. During the Second World War, she contributed to the national effort by training Air Force reservists in mathematics and science.
Known affectionately as “Kel,” she was admired for her meticulous standards, strong discipline, and deep pastoral care for students. Her commitment to MLC extended well beyond her retirement in 1965, and she remained closely connected to generations of Old Collegians as a Patron of their association.
