BiographyReverend John William Grove was a distinguished Methodist minister, educator, and Principal of MLC.
Born in 1868 in Wandiligong, Victoria, he was educated at Wesley College before attending the University of Melbourne, where he earned a Master of Arts and Bachelor of Laws, later also completing a Diploma of Education. Grove entered the Methodist ministry in 1891 and quickly established himself as a gifted preacher and teacher. His early career included service as Chaplain of Wesley College and various circuit appointments. From 1920 to 1929, he served in Perth, where he was Superintendent of the Central Mission and played a significant role in the development of Wesley College, Perth.
In 1929, Grove was appointed Principal of MLC, Hawthorn, succeeding Rev Dr William Fitchett. His leadership over the following decade was marked by skilled administration and a strong commitment to students. Known for his approachable and supportive manner, he fostered close relationships with pupils and took a keen interest in their intellectual and personal development. During his principalship, the Elsternwick branch of the College was established, and major redevelopment of the Hawthorn campus began.
Beyond his work in education, Grove was a prominent figure in the Methodist Church. He served as President of the Methodist Conference twice—once in Western Australia (1923) and again in Victoria and Tasmania (1935)—and was later President of the Melbourne College of Divinity.
Reverend Grove retired after a lifetime of service and died on 27 March 1945.
