BiographyJane Elton-Brown is a distinguished Australian musician, educator, and long-serving leader in music education, whose lifelong association with Methodist Ladies’ College (MLC), Melbourne, has had a significant and lasting impact.
An Old Collegian of MLC, Elton-Brown was enrolled from 1944 to 1955 and was a member of Fitchett House. A gifted and dedicated student, she achieved outstanding academic and musical distinction during her school years. She was awarded a ½ Junior Piano Scholarship (1950), followed by a Piano Scholarship (1953) and both Singing and Piano Scholarships (1955). She served as school pianist for two years, held the position of Associate Prefect, and was Dux of her class in both Year 11 and Year 12.
Following her schooling, Elton-Brown continued her studies at the University of Melbourne, where she completed a Bachelor of Music with first class honours and a Master of Music with first class honours, becoming the first person to receive this distinction at that level. She also completed a Diploma of Education, receiving the prestigious Dwight Prize as the top student in her year.
Her professional career became closely intertwined with MLC. In 1960, she returned to the College as Senior Singing Teacher, and in 1971 she was appointed Director of Music, a position she held until 1999. During her nearly three decades of leadership, she played a central role in shaping the College’s music program, fostering high standards of musical excellence and enriching the cultural life of the school.Date of Birth15 April 1939
