BiographyMiss Sutton was an accomplished educator whose career was marked by academic excellence, leadership, and deep commitment to her students. Educated at Camberwell Church of England Girls’ Grammar School, where she was both prefect and dux, she went on to complete a distinguished university career, earning a BA (Hons), Diploma of Education, and a Master of Arts in Christian Education.
She began teaching at Methodist Ladies’ College (MLC) in 1946, where she taught a wide range of subjects including History, Scripture, Science, Geography, and English. Appointed Senior Mistress of the Middle School in 1954, she later became Chief of Staff in 1966 and was elected Vice-Principal from 1967, reflecting the school’s growth and evolving needs. During her time at MLC, she also established the Liberal Studies program and was actively involved in extracurricular life, particularly debating, drama, choral activities, and the History Club, where she led tours and walks for students.
Highly regarded for her dedication and warmth, Miss Sutton was remembered by students for her genuine interest in them and her ability to make each feel valued. After retiring from MLC in 1973 following nearly three decades of service, she became Headmistress at Camberwell, a position she held until 1988. In retirement, she fulfilled a long-held ambition to travel to Europe, visiting places she had taught about for many years.
Recognised for her outstanding contribution to education, she was described as “one of the most dedicated, talented and industrious teachers” and was made an honorary member of the MLC Old Collegians’ Club.
